Stage 5
This is a trial of the Challenging route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.
The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.
This Challenging route is 1.9 mile (4300 steps) taking 43 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.
Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existant so please take care especially when crossing busy roads.
Once established, there will be much more historic information, questions and things to look for on the web link and the boards themselves
Bridge House – Battery
Street
The information board here will
give information about this entrance to Annan and the importance of the
impressive building which originally housed the first Annan Academy. It was the
place where some famous sons of the town were educated. There were other
'Parish' schools but the Academy was a fee paying establishment which taught
classical subjects.
There were houses and shops in a block here where Port Street now heads to the harbour. These were demolished to make way for a petrol station forecourt and in the 1990s this was removed to build this relief road. Imagine all the traffic which would have been travelling up and down the narrow street located closer to the river bridge.
Directions: Please find a safe place to cross the High Street towards the Blue Bell Inn where we will head down Battery Street.
As you pass the cobbled courtyard
at the back imagine the carriages and coaches changing horses here with
passengers taking on food or resting for the night.
The next location is near the
bottom of the hill
