Stage 4
This is a trial of the Challenging route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.
The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.
This Challenging route is 1.9 mile (4300 steps) taking 43 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.
Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existant so please take care especially when crossing busy roads.
Once established, there will be much more historic information, questions and things to look for on the web link and the boards themselves
Annan Harbour – Bridge House
There is a lot of building work
soon to take place here as Annan Harbour Action Group refurbish buildings here
and on to the Merse. Here they will tell stories of the shipbuilding, fishing
fleets, migration vessels which used the port.
A variety of goods would be both imported and exported from here. One of interest was Tweedies. They imported guano from across the world and as analytical chemists they produced fertilisers and manure specifically for different soil types. They would then also sell you the turnip seeds which would best use those fertilisers. They had a base on the High Street but the manufacturing and transportation all centred on this location. Imagine the smell - Fish and manure !
Directions: Return towards the High Street but take a slight detour to visit the Jubilee Gardens and take the riverside walk. This section involves a couple of sets of steep steps. If this is a problem, visit and rest in the gardens but return along Port Street to the road bridge.
Once you have enjoyed the views
leave the bridge and pass in front of the impressive Bridge House on the corner
of the new Port Street and a couple of feet into Port Street will be the next
location.
