Stage 2

This is a trial of the Challenging route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.

The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.

This Challenging route is 1.9 mile (4300 steps) taking 43 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.

Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existant so please take care especially when crossing busy roads.

Once established, there will be much more historic information, questions and things to look for on the  web link and the boards themselves

Downies Wynd - Station

Here the information board will give details of Annan the History Town, the High Street and the Riding of the Marches traditions.

This location gives a good view of the historic sandstone buildings, a lot of them are listed buildings.

Look out for guardstones which kept carriage wheels away from the walls as they turned corners.

Downies Wynd used to be the only main route to the Solway before Bank Street was built.

The coming of the railway changed the town in many ways and as we head along Downies Wynd towards the station, imagine all the carriage traffic using these narrow streets and all the houses, shops, pubs and businesses here.

Directions: Go along Downies Wynd and at the top end cross carefully to the right hand side of St John’s Road. At the mini roundabout the next location is just over Station Road.
